Doors Open Day is one of the few days that this ancient Chapel of St James the Apostle is open for the public to explore. The chapel was probably established in the 11thC in connection with the Forth ferry crossing before it was gifted by Robert the Bruce to the Abbey of Dunfermline in 1320.
It was the first stop for travellers from Edinburgh to Dunfermline who were en route for their religious pilgrimage to St Andrews.
The chapel was destroyed by Cromwell in 1651 and the ruined interior and adjacent plot then became the village burial ground. In the 18thC this was taken over by the North Queensferry Sailors Society who, in 1752, enclosed the ground with the wall that stands today, as recorded by the inscription at the entrance.
