The Tolbooth is the oldest building in Stonehaven, dating from the late 16th century and is category A listed. The original use of the stone building was that of courthouse and prison. Today the ground floor contains a museum that showcases the building’s turbulent past and Stonehaven’s rich history.
Visitors on Doors Open Days can examine the model of the Earth’s earliest known air breathing animal found at nearby Cowie, reminisce over past domestic life, read informative panels on notable past individuals and events, including the founding of the Scotch Colony in New Brunswick, step into a mock prison cell, view old photographs of the town and study the local geology.
The Tolbooth museum is one of the very few museums that has a permanent display of Scottish agates.
Children will be able to go hunting the dinosaur should they feel brave enough!!!!!
*Please note – the 1st floor contains the Tolbooth Restaurant which is not part of Doors Open Days.
