As part of the Landmark Trust’s 60th anniversary celebrations, all six of its properties on the Saddell Estate will be open for the public to explore, offering a unique chance to experience the beauty of Saddell Bay.
Nestled on the eastern side of the Kintyre Peninsula, the area is also known for its rich wildlife and breathtaking coastal scenery.
The highlight of the event is the newly reopened Saddell Castle, freshly restored after extensive conservation work over the past year. Visitors can learn about the history of each Landmark property on the estate and the thoughtful restoration efforts undertaken by the Landmark Trust to preserve them for future generations. On the shoreline, look out for GRIP, a striking permanent sculpture by renowned artist Antony Gormley.
The Landmark properties open over the weekend include Saddell Castle, Saddell Lodge, Saddell House, Ferryman’s Cottage, Cul-na-Shee, and Shore Cottage. A small bothy can also be discovered along Saddell beach.
We’ll also be joined by the Kintyre Rainforest Alliance, who will share insights into the site’s rich biodiversity and the unique qualities of Scotland’s temperate rainforest.
Restored by the Landmark Trust, these buildings are carefully conserved to retain their historic character while being made fit for modern use, which is a core part of our ethos. Restored Landmarks include comfortable furnishings and modern appliances but provide in depth information about the history of the buildings through a number of resources.
The event highlights how architectural heritage can be preserved and reimagined, offering a tangible connection to the past while meeting the needs of the present. It perfectly captures the theme’s focus on heritage as both reflection and foundation for the future.
Kintyre Rainforest Alliance will be conducting guided walks identifying species of particular interest on the site. For timings, please check the website.
