Benholm and Johnshaven Heritage Hub Museum is in the centre of the historic fishing village of Johnshaven within the Old Lifeboat House which was established in 1891. Run by a dedicated group of volunteers who are passionate about preserving the history and heritage of our local area, the museum offers visitors a fantastic hands-on visitor experiences telling the story and history of Benholm and Johnshaven.
This year’s exhibition in Johnshaven dives into the stories of childhood in Benholm and Johnshaven, offering a warm and engaging look at growing up in these coastal communities. Visitors can explore a hands-on display of toys through the decades, sparking memories and curiosity across generations.
Johnshaven was recently featured in the BBC’s Villages by the Sea, where archaeologist Ben Robinson uncovered its rich maritime and industrial past.
Benholm and Johnshaven Heritage Museum will be open longer during Doors Open Days to allow visitors to view our exhibition, entry is free, and our friendly volunteers will be there to answer any questions. We have a multi-sensory, hands-on exhibition with lots of example of toys to reminisce over, investigate and explore, an old school area and a scavenger hunt to help keep children entertained.
The museum is in a Category C Listed Building and is within the Conservation Area of Johnshaven, constructed to house the Johnshaven lifeboats and is an important landmark in the architecture of the village. It is important to the volunteers who manage the venue to preserve the integrity of the building and to celebrate The Lifeboat House’s past as a key landmark in harbour area.
