Aperçu

A Mecca for French scientific research, the Office de recherche scientifique et technique d'outre-mer (ORSTOM), which became the Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD) in 1998, has been located in Bondy for 80 years in buildings that were created for it. Designed by the architect Jacques Gauthier and built in several phases from 1946 to 1961, the buildings – laboratories but also farm buildings, canteen, accommodation, greenhouses – of high architectural quality, develop in a remarkable landscape site in the heart of Bondy North. Acquired by the Department of Seine-Saint-Denis in 2024, this unique ensemble which opens its doors to the public for the first time on the occasion of the European Heritage Days, is preparing to become a major site of the social and solidarity economy in the territory. By Hélène Caroux, head of cultural heritage inventory and Grégoire Lechat, project director at the Seine-Saint-Denis department. An initiative of the Seine-Saint-Denis department.
