La Monnaie, one of Europe's most prestigious opera houses, needed more space and, over the years, the institution has had the opportunity to install its workshops in various ancillary buildings. Today, it is housed in the former Vanderborght store, an emblematic Art Deco building erected between 1932 and 1935 by architects Léon Govaerts and Alexis Van Vaerenbergh. The complex occupies a vast block between Rue de l'Écuyer and Rue du Fossé aux Loups. On this side, the facade features an imposing horizontal volume with a reinforced concrete structure and an abundance of windows. The building comprises seven floors, two of which are stepped back in the upper section, counterbalanced by a slender vertical tower marking one of the entrances. It was on this side that the La Monnaie workshops took up residence, while the part opening onto Rue de l'Écuyer, now independent, currently hosts cultural events. La Monnaie has optimised the premises, fitting out five studios and two large rehearsal rooms. One, named Malibran after the famous singer, has 300 seats and can be used to present small-scale operas and shows. The other, named Fiocco after La Monnaie's first music director, can also host concerts and other events. There is also an impressive editing room, the same size as the stage. It comprises three storeys in the middle of the building, framed by the carpentry, metalwork, sculpture and accessories workshops. Costume designers rule the fifth floor, while the first floor is devoted to painting and tapestry, not far from the two large rooms reserved for educational activities.
