Aperçu

Nestled between Sainte-Catherine church and Place de l’Yser, the Quays district bears witness to Brussels’ former port activities, both in its place names and in the distinctive urban morphology of its main boulevards. The district underwent a major transformation after the docks were filled in and the large port warehouses disappeared in the 1910s. New boulevards were built in the interwar period, which explains the presence of a large number of buildings in a style mainly related to Art Deco. Intense commercial activity remained, however, as evidenced by the concentration of numerous wholesale firms, sometimes represented by remarkable Art Deco complexes. This tour invites you to discover this varied Art Deco heritage, with its mix of shops, luxury apartments and social housing, just a stone’s throw from the city centre. In collaboration with ARAU, Atelier de Recherche et d'Action Urbaines.
