Headquarters of the Port of Brussels
In the late 1930s, Société anonyme du Canal et des Installations maritimes de Bruxelles decided to construct a new building for the port’s services. Plans were drawn up in 1937, and planning permission was granted in July 1938. Designed by unknown architects, this beautiful Art Deco building combines orange brick and blue stone. On the ground floor, it once housed revenue and accounting offices, a waiting room and exhibition hall, offices for port officials, statistical services and a concierge service. A series of frescoes illustrating the activities of the old "intra muros" port adorn the walls. A large stained glass window, the work of master stained glass artist Colpaert, illuminates this unique access to the upper level, which once housed the management offices. This is the building where all port infrastructure activities are managed, with the inner port of Brussels being the second largest in Belgium.
