Aperçu

1928 marked a high point in the career of Antoine Courtens, who had to take on two major projects: the Palais de la Folle Chanson, not far from the Abbaye de la Cambre, and the Hôtel Haerens. To best fit the plot, the architect designed a corner building with a rotunda tower at the connection point; this tower acts as a sort of junction between the lower part, a tenement house overlooking Avenue de la Ramée, and the upper part, a city dwelling adapted to society life. The resolutely geometric shapes, white facades and elegantly understated stylised decor place the building in the purest Art Deco style. Courtens’ way of conceiving things was undoubtedly inspired by Victor Horta, whom he trained with. It also borrows certain elements from Frank Lloyd Wright, such as the architectural frieze concealing the flat roof. Particular attention was paid to the interior design, especially the large entrance hall, which was finished in high-quality marble. The floor features alternating triangular elements in black marble and veined marble, the latter also used for the base and treads of the staircase (CL 08/08/1988). In collaboration with Arkadia (FR) and Bruxelles Bavard (NL/EN). Photographs are not permitted.
