House Tenaerts, Avenue Coghen 68
With the exception of his first known Beaux-Arts-style building in Laeken, dating from 1922, and a neo-Gothic-inspired building in Jette from 1927, Louis Tenaerts’ career was marked by Art Deco, with occasional Viennese Secession inspiration and strong Streamline Moderne tendencies. His collaboration with CIB (Comptoir Immobilier Belge) in the early 1930s expanded his production. It was in this context that he was asked to work on Avenue Coghen. In 1934, he built this house, which rises vertically from a narrow plot of land. The high, stained-glass window, topped by a cubic space on the third floor, which gives access to the terrace, further enhances this approach. The house has a black brick base with white pointing, the two tones chosen by Tenaerts for this facade, as for many other houses in the district.
