Aperçu

Attributed to architect Adolphe Pirenne, this eclectic-style mansion, which even includes stables, has a Flemish neo-Renaissance-inspired facade. Initially inhabited by the Colson family, it was sold to industrialist Eugène Pelgrims in 1927 before becoming municipal property in 1963. A lover of the arts, this well-educated pharmacist gave architect Fernand Petit the go-ahead for a complete overhaul of the complex in 1927. The interior reflects both Flemish Renaissance-inspired historicism in the living room and dining room, for example, and Art Deco influences in the washroom and winter garden. This garden retains an elegant openwork concrete structure adorned with bluish stained glass windows decorated with stars. Also in the Art Deco style are the upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms, which have retained their beige and black marble facings, built-in wardrobes and mirrors, and a beautiful set of stained glass windows. The main oak staircase dates from 1905. It is illuminated by pastel Art Deco stained glass windows featuring stylised plant motifs. Today, the ground and first floors of Maison Pelgrims are dedicated to the arts and creativity in all its forms: visual, musical and literary. Now a true "Maison des Artistes", the premises host a variety of exhibitions (painting, photography, sculpture), as well as small concerts and conferences.
