Aperçu

At the corner of Avenues Van Volxem and Pont de Luttre, there still stands a large concrete building that combines the stylistic aspects of Art Deco and industrial functionalism, a vestige of the brewing activities of the Wielemans-Ceuppens establishments. To keep pace with technical advances, the third generation of Wielemans asked architect Adrien Blomme to design a new brewing house in 1930. The double-four-ship construction is the largest of its kind in Europe. It is sumptuously glazed and a veritable showcase for the company’s prosperity. Impressive copper vats were installed, and other beverages were added to Stout, Scotch, Pils and Bock. Production slowed down during the Second World War, but picked up again and continued until September 1988. Several years ago, the Blomme building was converted into WIELS, an international laboratory for the creation and dissemination of contemporary art. The original vats and silos have been restored to their former glory. (CL 20/07/1993) To help you discover the architectural and intangible heritage of WIELS, you will find three characters in the area - some historical, others invented - who will tell you all about the fabulous heritage of these places. Take a step back in time, too, and explore the area around WIELS on an audio tour of the district's history. Guided tours are also available, with registration required via the WIELS website, as a complement to the free activities organized for Heritage Days.
