Aperçu

After the First World War, the Société Nationale des Habitations et Logements à Bon Marché was founded in 1919 to remedy the severe shortage of housing for the working class. Raymond Unwin’s garden city ideology was deemed ideal for providing everyone with a comfortable home with a garden in an attractive, healthy, open-air environment. One of the oldest garden cities in the region, and one of only three in Anderlecht, is La Roue. The first workers’ housing dates back to 1907, and the whole district was built from 1920 onwards, serving as a testing ground for the latest building materials. Street names such as Rue des Huit Heures and Avenue des Droits de l’Homme refer to the struggles of the working class. The school building and St. Joseph church are Art Deco masterpieces. In collaboration with Klare Lijn. Photographs are permitted, but without a flash.
