Aperçu

Formerly concentrated in the Cureghem district of Anderlecht, as well as in Schaerbeek, the Jewish community felt the need to build a larger synagogue than the one in use since 1910 near Les Marolles. After the purchase of a 500 m² plot in 1926, the plans for the future building were entrusted to Antwerp Jewish architect Joseph De Lange, already responsible for the construction of the Ostend synagogue and two others in Antwerp. Work began in 1928, and the white brick and stone building was designed in an Art Deco style inspired by Romanesque architecture. The high walls are punctuated with lesenes, and the interior features granite-covered floors. The synagogue was finally inaugurated on 6 April 1933. Today, it welcomes members of the Brussels Orthodox Jewish Community, who gather here to celebrate the major festivals of the Jewish calendar. Photographs are allowed. However, it is forbidden to photograph the security systems and access routes inside.
