Hotel Riez
Designed in 1927-1928 by architect Jean-Baptiste Dewin for Joachim Riez, an industrialist specialising in the sale of building materials, this Art Deco-style townhouse features facades that combine white stone and orange brick on bluestone bases. On the ground floor, the building housed offices for Compagnie Industrielle du Rupel, and on the first floor, the owner’s apartment. The owner had in fact requested two separate entrances. The most spectacular is undoubtedly the one created in the cut between the two roadways. It is flanked by tapering pillars whose upper sections, carved with birds, seem to support a stone canopy. The door, adorned with ironwork depicting seahorses, leads into a monumental hall with walls panelled in grey Sainte-Anne marble. It leads to another hall, framed by an oak staircase with Art Deco motifs, illuminated by a monumental stained-glass window featuring a flowing fountain framed by flowerbeds. Inside, carefully maintained by the de Molinari family on behalf of the CDA, the rooms reveal intact decor reflecting the impact of the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris (1925), including furniture by Frères De Coene of Courtrai. The wood-toned living room and dining room transport you back in time, while the kitchen, straight out of the 1920s, features predominantly grey ceramics enhanced by stained glass windows in shades of yellow, blue, and orange. As you can see, the Hotel Riez is a true gem of Art Deco in Brussels. In collaboration with the Brussels Art Deco Society. With the support of the CDA. Photographs are permitted, but only with smartphones.
