Art Deco on display in Laeken
Laeken, attached to the Brussels municipality in 1921, would undergo exceptional development. The former village became a prime site for Art Deco architecture. Redeveloped for the 1935 Universal Exhibition, the Heysel Plateau and Osseghem Park became a major centre of interest and leisure. The interwar period saw the construction of numerous residential districts around the exhibition centres. They predominantly featured Art Deco. Architects integrated into their creations all the comforts made possible by the modern innovations that accompanied this movement. Starting at the old Laeken town hall, you will travel between facades representative of this era. Discover a few hidden gems on Rue Mont Saint-Alban and Rue Ernest Salu. Then pedal up to the exhibition halls to get some height before heading back down to the municipality’s narrow streets. In collaboration with Pro Velo. Participants must bring their own bikes. Photographs are permitted, but only with smartphones.
