The Kunsthumaniora is part of a monumental school complex comprising a number of buildings, including an primary school and kindergarten, 't Plantzoentje, the Martha Somers Lyceum, a caretaker's office, a boiler room and the former headmistress's residence. The 220-hectare complex was built between 1925 and 1948 to designs by Brussels architect Alfred Minner. The original Art Deco style has been supplemented by modernist features. The Kunsthumaniora consists of two long, almost parallel buildings, connected to each other and to the high school by two short, three-storey wings, one of which houses the staircases. The long, uncluttered facades, clad in orange brick, are enhanced by numerous sculpted elements, such as wheat fields, a stormy sea, a rainbow and an erupting volcano, which appear in the window overmantels. Inside, the functional architecture favours airy, light-filled spaces, sometimes illuminated by stained glass windows with floral and animal decorations by master stained glass artist Fernand Crickx. Colourful floor tiles and wainscoting in a variety of colours and patterns, granito staircases finished with marble mosaic strips and featuring continuous handrails and chrome pipe handrails make up a fine example of Art Deco at work in a school.
