Art Deco in Evere
Following the First World War, the airfield set up by the German occupiers on the boundary between Evere and Haren was taken over and used by the Belgian State. To provide housing for the airfield’s personnel, a new district was built between Bas-Evere (the historic centre to the north) and Haut-Evere (a district that developed from the end of the 19th century to the south). A number of architects active in the municipality between the wars were influenced by Art Deco, particularly in its Streamline Moderne style. The aim of the Heritage Days walk is to introduce visitors to the presence of Art Deco in Evere, in both private and public buildings. Visitors will pass the former No. 1 school (now home to the Academy of Music) and the town hall, both built in the late 1930s. In collaboration with the Municipality of Evere. Photographs are permitted, but without a flash.
