Local administration Saint-Josse-ten-Noode — R.V.S. building
This functionalist-style building was built on the site of an 1863 mansion by architect Hansotte. It was intended to house the offices of the Rotterdamsche Verzekering Societeten. Jos Duynstee, whose name appears on the facade, seems to have been the master builder. The project received planning permission in 1936. The original building on Rue Saint-François was soon extended to Rue Royale. The elevation is distinguished by a skilful interplay of spaces and wide and narrow, rectangular or almost square openings. The corner element or banner accentuates the vertical bias of the whole structure, which is not countered by the terraced roofs on different levels. The cement facade tops a wide bluestone base. The interior, with its functional organisation and staircase lit by superb stained-glass windows, also features exceptional ceramic decorations by Jaap Gidding, an artist of the Amsterdam School.
