Elegance at Its Finest: Art Deco and Other Gems on Franklin Roosevelt Avenue
The Solbosch district, once part of the vast Soignes Forest, began its transformation into an urban area when it hosted the 1910 Universal Exhibition. The Université Libre campus moved here after the First World War,. One of Brussels’ most prestigious residential districts has sprung up along the southern extension of Avenue des Nations. The district has benefited from the picturesque English-style landscape of the Bois de la Cambre, which has also influenced town planning regulations. Numerous examples of sophisticated interwar architecture add to the unique atmosphere. The walk takes in Art Deco gems such as Michel Polak’s meticulously restored Villa Empain. Along the way, in addition to Art Deco, there are houses in other, related or contrasting styles from the interwar period, designed by architects such as Henry van de Velde, Stanislas Jasinski, Jacques Obozinski and Alexis Dumont. These buildings offer a glimpse into the residential concepts of the period, including the emergence of elegant ideas in American housing. In collaboration with Korei Guided Tours.
