Aperçu

Entirely decked out in pinkish-grey "Klampsteen" bricks, St. Adrian’s Church, consecrated in 1941, was built not far from an eponymous chapel that had existed since the 15th century. Construction began in 1938, and was entrusted to architect Auguste Vanden Nieuwenborg, who had to work within the constraints of a limited budget. He drew up plans for a massive church with clearly defined spaces connected around the central nave. He skilfully fused the Art Deco style in vogue at the time with Romanesque reminiscences. Brick arches, adapted from Romanesque Lombardy, skilfully highlight all the building’s openings. It is the reliefs and the play of light and shadow they create that make the decorative statement. The architect chose to integrate the powerful bell tower into the main facade, no doubt inspired by some of the hall churches of northern Europe and solutions that already existed in the Mosan and Rhenish regions in the Romanesque period. The central portal is set in a pronounced recess which, by extending, emphasises the vertical momentum of the bell tower. Inside, the pillars and vaults are covered in sandy-yellow brick. You can also admire the seven stained-glass windows created by designer Danieli in the 1960s.
