Résidence de La Cambre
With its 17 floors, some consider the Résidence de la Cambre to be Brussels’ first skyscraper. Commissioned by developer Gérard Kaisin, who was already involved in the construction of the Pavillons Français in Schaerbeek, the building was completed in 1937 to plans by architect Marcel Peeters, who adopted a New York Art Deco style. It’ has even been dubbed the "Chicago Tower", due to its powerful, symmetrically stepped silhouette. On top of the concrete frame, the facade was clad with bluestone on the entire ground floor and in the end bays over three storeys. The rest, apart from the white stone bands on the first three floors, is punctuated by high pilasters with orange brick spaces. A granite frame marks the entrance door, which leads into a vast hall with a stone-clad floor decorated with black marble diamonds. A staircase leads with a certain majesty to the lifts and other corridors. (CL 15/07/2005)
