Ramaekers building
A fine example of a modernist building, the eight-storey structure designed in 1929 by architect Joe Ramaekers occupies a strategic corner position, emphasised by a slightly protruding polygonal tower. Purple "Belvedere" bricks cover the 65 m facade. While the exterior features relatively simple moulding, the interior has been decorated with particular care. Just look at the brick pilasters in the lift shafts, the stained glass windows in the stairwells and corridors, the buff earthenware tile facings with granite edging, the lighting fixtures and the floors with contrasting marble paving. Architecture enthusiasts will have clearly perceived, from all these elements, the pervasive influence of the modernist expressionism of the Amsterdam School. (CL 16/03/1995)
