Who is building Brussels? — Special Art Deco
Who built Brussels? - Édition Art Déco is a workshop designed and run as part of the Children’s University by Alison Inglisa, architect and scientific collaborator at ULB’s Faculty of Architecture. Intended for children aged 9 to 12, it aims to raise their awareness of Brussels’ architectural heritage. For the Heritage Days 2025, the workshop will be held at the ULB La Cambre-Horta Faculty of Architecture (Place Eugène Flagey 19, 1050 Brussels). This special event invites children to discover three major architects who helped shape Brussels through their iconic Art Deco creations. Lasting 1.5 hrs, the workshop begins with an introduction to the Brussels Capital Region: its 19 municipalities, the origin of its name and the major stages of its urban development. This contextualisation introduces the different architectural styles found in the Region, with a focus on the characteristics of Art Deco: geometric shapes, materials and colours. The children then take part in a creative workshop where they colour illustrated cards of Brussels Art Deco facades. These cards, with building addresses, allow them to visit the sites independently at a later date. The workshop ends with an interactive quiz, where participants have to recognise Art Deco buildings from a selection of photos of Brussels buildings in various styles. The workshop will be given in French. In collaboration with the Faculty of architecture La Cambre Horta and the Université des enfants, both affiliated with ULB.
