Aperçu

Two masterpieces quickly spring to mind when it comes to Art Deco in Brussels: the Hôtel Haerens in Uccle and the Palais de la Folle Chanson in Ixelles. These two buildings were the brainchild of Antoine Courtens. A pupil of Victor Horta, he trained at the Institut des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp and worked with the great master, notably on the site of Belgium’s Pavillon d’Honneur at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. Through Victor Horta, he discovered the aesthetics of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. With this solid international background, he moved to Brussels and began his career. And what a career it was! Private mansions, apartment buildings, office blocks, private homes, and more... Antoine Courtens developed his Art Deco style, tinged with modernism. A born decorator working for the more affluent classes, he proposed not only the general plans for the home, but also the interior fittings, working with durable and precious materials. Follow the guide to discover the work of this international architect, who left his mark on Belgian Art Deco with his inimitable style. In collaboration with Pro Velo.
