Aperçu

In 2014, MDW Architecture bought an elegant house with a Beaux-Arts facade that once housed the haute-couture house Smets-Pirson. Recent research has revealed that Joseph Smets submitted unsigned plans to the municipality of Etterbeek in 1926. In addition to the couple’s living quarters, the professional space included "a waiting room, three fitting rooms, offices, a store, or storage area, and a workshop". The interior, which has been carefully restored, was designed by architect Georges France in a refined Art Deco style close to modernism. A former trainee at Jean-Baptiste Dewin, he was careful to let in an abundance of light, thanks in particular to the skylight in the stairwell and the wide glass door in the lobby, adorned with geometrically designed ironwork. On the ground floor, the lower walls and floors were clad in a combination of different marbles. Most rooms have retained their original hardware and fireplaces. It is easy to imagine the seamstresses working in the seemingly unchanged workshop, with its granito floor and metal columns supporting a side-lit skylight.
