Designed by Franz Hemelsoet, the Théâtre Saint-Michel opened in 1932. While the exterior is in the same Rhenish neo-Romanesque style as all the buildings at Collège Saint-Michel, once you step through the door, you are in for a surprise. The architect created a world of Art Deco style. A monumental staircase takes pride of place in a vast foyer that can seat nearly 700 people. A half-moon staircase leads to a straight flight of stairs, which then divides into two, all adorned by wrought-iron railings. Similarly, the vast hall, one of the largest in the capital, adopts the purest Art Deco style, which is evident in the decor, from the ironwork on the balconies to the mouldings and geometric light fixtures. Thanks to stalls and two upper balconies, all spectators (1,800 could be seated at the time) face the stage, in what is known as the "Wagnerian" style. This art venue was managed by Collège Saint-Michel until 1993. After several private managers, a new volunteer team has been running the theatre since 2024, with financial support from the Compagnie de Jésus and others. Self-guided tours of the NOVUM (theatre foyer and stalls) on Saturday from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm and Sunday from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm. No access to backstage or balconies. Guided tours of the entire building, including backstage, by reservation, on Saturday and Sunday morning by the NOVUM team, and on Sunday afternoon by Arkadia (FR) and Klare Lijn (NL/EN).
