The film Quartier Nomade (Nomadic Quarter), directed by Alexandra Rice, is being shown at a special screening at the Cinéma Galeries. From Flanders to Wallonia, Quartier Nomade crosses Belgium in an annual tour that has been going on for centuries. Its inhabitants, the fairgrounds, are, however, well-established in modernity. In the banality of their daily life and their life course, This film questions the unconscious tradition that runs through them. This immersive film paints a portrait of an engaging community which is insidiously endangered in the face of city regulations and the discrediting of popular culture. Since 2025, Belgian fairground culture has been part of the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. About Cinéma Galeries In 1939, at the request of brothers Oswald and Robert Putzeys, architect Paul Bonduelle was commissioned to build a cinema in the heart of the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert complex. To ensure optimum integration, he designed a circular drum at the entrance, set back from the arcades and tall convex windows, flanked on either side by a ticket office and telephone booth. The interior features subtle Mediterranean and Romanesque decoration: the mosaic motifs in the entrance hall, the stacked tiles in the foyer, the niches with marine motifs in the stairwell and the pink, terracotta and copper tones typical of the rustic Provençal style, whose popularity was undoubtedly linked to the success of author Marcel Pagnol’s trilogy. According to Paul Bonduelle, "This new cinema is different from everything that has been achieved to date in this type of construction through its very specific search for modernism and a wonderful application of the latest innovations, both in terms of projection and sound, and the refinement of viewer comfort and safety." The very busy Cinéma Galeries screens recent films, but also offers cycles devoted to actors and directors, and festivals dedicated to a particular country or continent. The underground galleries, which were used as shelters in the event of a wartime attack, have been converted into a vast exhibition hall of over 1,000 m² that hosts cultural events related to cinema. (CL 18/11/1993) Director Alexandra Rice will introduce the screening, which will conclude with a Q&A session with two of the film's protagonists, Marco Delforge and Françoise Lamontagne (his mom), from the fairground world. The event will be bilingual (French/Dutch).
