The Canal District, Art Deco at the Service of Industry
After the First World War, the canal district was transformed. Following the widening of the Brussels-Charleroi canal between Porte de Flandre and Place Sainctelette, the Maritime Quarter was given new avenues, all named in honour of the soldiers of 14-18 (Boulevard de l’Yser and Boulevard de Dixmude, for example). These transformations led to the definitive closure of the former docks of the Port of Brussels, giving way to a whole ecosystem of warehouses, factories and apartment buildings. Follow the canal from the Maritime Quarter to Molenbeek and the impressive Tour & Taxis site to discover the work of renowned architects such as Joseph Van Neck, Alexis Dumont, Fernand Petit and above all Joseph Diongre. Each in their own way, they celebrated Art Deco in a variety of buildings, each more impressive than the last. In collaboration with Pro Velo. Participants must bring their own bikes. Photographs are permitted, but only with smartphones.
