Aperçu

6 September 2025 (10:00 - 17:00) 7 September 2025 (13:00 - 17:00) A striking red sandstone Gothic church which opened for worship in 1868. As well as being a stunning piece of architecture, beautifully displayed by recently installed modern lighting, this building is full of interesting artefacts, but, more importantly, is a living place of Christian worship, used week in, week out by a congregation of friendly people. The church is in fact open almost every day of the year for private prayer and contemplation, or for people who just wish to explore and admire its beauty and peaceful, ‘prayer-soaked’ atmosphere. St John’s contains many memorials, in glass, stone and other materials, commemorating individuals and the roles they have played in the town and as part of this community. The Congregation who call St John’s home has, over the years, played a significant part in the history of Dumfries and district, and continues to do so. The building itself is a major architectural landmark in Dumfries town. Members of the Congregation will be present to welcome you to the church building and answer any questions, there will also be informational leaflets. Main service at 11am and Choral Evenson at 6pm on Sunday 7th - all welcome to join. Water bottles can be refilled. Venue fairly quiet; absolute quiet cannot be guaranteed.
