Threading Stories Collective - Tenement House
16 September 2025 (10:00 - 15:00) 17 September 2025 (10:00 - 15:00) 20 September 2025 (10:00 - 17:00) 21 September 2025 (10:00 - 17:00) 16th and 17th of September Visit creative textile workshops exploring personal memories and histories in relation to objects found through The Tenement House visit. Visitors to the house will receive a short introduction to the Tenement House followed by browsing the collections individually to consider which objects or patterns they relate to most, and why that might be. They will be offered opportunities to ‘recreate’ these objects in embroidery or applique from recycled fabrics, with the option of using pre-prepared templates or their own drawings. These works will be included in a collaborative artwork which will be displayed at the Tenement House and their ‘favourites’ will be drawn on a map of the Tenement House that will be later recreated as a colour-in sheet for visitors. Due to the slow nature of stitching and the space available, the workshops will be bookable but free and at the end visitors will receive a certificate of participation in the Threading Stories and Tenement House collaboration. Tenement House Café will provide tea and coffee. 20th and 21st of September Threading Stories Collective will be displaying the results of the previous workshops at the Tenement House and will be present to showcase the group’s mission and potential possibilities of future collaborations. Overview Threading Stories Collective originated from a series of embroidery workshops organized by Migrant Voice in January 2024. We are now a constituted creative group, focused mainly on textiles, but open to any kind of creative activity. We aim to ensure that at least 50% of our members are migrants/have experience of migration and that our meetings are safe spaces from migrants and non-migrants to exchanges stories, share skills and learn about each other cultures. The conversations around the table are often private and personal and we expect the members to respect the privacy and confidentiality of others. We meet twice a month: on the first and the third Sunday from 11 o’clock. Currently, our meeting venue is Kelvin Hall, Argyle Street, Glasgow, G3 8AW. To ensure that we learn new skill, we are asking all members to take turns to deliver a workshop to the rest of the group. We are striving to show our works through the exhibitions and promote them through our collective Instagram. When possible, we wish to collaborate with other organisations to deliver public works and workshops that promote the positive impact of migration on the local culture and society at large. The Tenement House is an important part of the Glasgow heritage. It offers an opportunity to consider the more significant changes in our surroundings (e.g. the introduction of the nearby motorway), the evolution of the society expectations such as home ownership/tenancy, type of homes that we live in, the independence of women and women as entrepreneurs, etc. It also offers a reflection of how much or how little has changed in terms of normal domestic lives – energy and heating, objects such as coal irons, clocks, butter churns, and their use, the fashions and textiles, designs, decorative items, etc. There is a wealth of opportunity to engage in more depth with the history of the house and imagine and re-imagine the day to day lives. Due to the historic nature of the building, the House is not accessible for wheelchair access. There are 15 steps with handrails to the reception desk, exhibition, shop area and toilet in the ground-floor flat. WC include baby change facilities. The Tenement House Café offers Hot and cold drinks, sweet treats, and gluten and dairy-free options are available. There are a number of car parks located in the area, as well as short stay on-street parking nearby managed by Glasgow City Council. A Braille guidebook and large print guides are available. There are free family trails as part of the admission tickets and Autism Friendly Tenement explorer packs on request.
