Visitors can browse display boards which showcase the stunning ironwork railings and the creative cementwork and craftsmanship that marked the growth and development of the town of Stornoway in the late 19th/ early 20th century. SHS staff will be in attendance to welcome visitors and engage with any queries. The walk-around exhibition looks at the development of the built environment of Stornoway at a time when the thriving herring industry was generating wealth, leading to a building boom which led to innovative and imaginative architecture, and the development of construction and workmanship skills. The exhibition features houses and buildings with distinctive features, some with interesting histories. The nearest wheelchair accessible toilet is next door in main Town Hall building. A quiet space can be made available on request, and water bottles can be filled on request.
