Aperçu

In Cinquantenaire Park, there is a small building resembling a Greek temple. This pavilion was the first public commission for the young Victor Horta. The design, which contains Greek elements, also features Art Nouveau principles, visible in the details. Inside is the famous relief Les Passions Humaines by Jef Lambeaux. This monumental work (11 m long and 6 m high) in Carrara marble represents the pleasures and sufferings of humanity. Victor Horta’s neoclassical temple and Jef Lambeaux’s relief have been inseparable since 1898. The tense relationship between the two artists, the sensually writhing nude and the building often closed due to its precarious state have contributed to the history, "scandal" and mystery surrounding the pavilion. After a complete restoration in 2019, the pavilion has been restored to its original splendour. Accessible only through a guided tour by reservation (FR/NL/EN) on Saturday and Sunday from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm. Photographs are permitted, but without a flash or tripod.
