160 years ago, in 1865, the department store 'Au Printemps' was born. Created by Jules and Augustine Jaluzot, a visionary couple, in a still peripheral and not very commercial area, it establishes itself from its opening as a brand with an original identity: "In Spring, everything is new, fresh and pretty like the title: In Spring". Rebuilt in 1882 by Paul Sédille and considered by historians as the prototype of the modern department store, the Printemps inspired the "cathedral of commerce" described by Zola in Au bonheur des dames, published the following year. During the weekend of the European Heritage Days, we invite you to discover in exclusivity the backstage and the most hidden secrets of the Printemps Haussmann, listed as a Historical Monument since 1975. It’s a totally free guided walk and a fabulous adventure between architecture, fashion and history: from a private terrace to the 360° panoramic view of Paris to the 7th Heaven, its floor dedicated to circularity, monumental underground grates where artisans and technicians are active and where the Machine Room and the galleries of the Second World War are hidden. This year, as we celebrate the centenary of Art Deco, the route will highlight the heritage treasures of Spring inscribed in this style. Among the most remarkable: the "flowery" rotundas, the majestic glass dome created in 1910, or even the grand monumental staircase, which regained all its brilliance in 2023 after forty years of closure to the public. The department store will reveal itself as you have never seen it! Starting point for visits: the reception on the ground floor of the Printemps de l'Homme (on the Haussmann boulevard side) In parallel with the guided tours, you can discover the exhibition "Sac Sac Sac", presented from September 4th to October 23rd under the historic dome on the 6th floor of the Printemps de la Femme, as well as on the footbridge on the 2nd floor. More than a simple artifact, the bag consecrates the symbiosis between form, space, structure, material and ornament. Like the object studied, the exhibition aims to be transdisciplinary, bringing together architecture, sculpture, decorative arts, textiles and fashion. Through the prism of historical and contemporary pieces — loans from fashion houses, collectors, ESMOD study collection, Spring archives —, but also pictorial representations, the exhibition depicts the bag from all its angles and in all its technicality. A rich iconography (magazine covers, editorial series, fashion illustrations, paintings) converses with legal documents, patents, drawings, model registrations or exclusive video interviews. Informations Free visits by reservation. Opening of the slots on August 25 Book
