Aperçu

We invite you, as every year, freely to walk in the gardens. We will share together the stories and encounters that continue to bring this historic site to life. The castle of Fou, placed on a chalky hill to the left of the Vienne, consists of a large main building, with two wings at right angles. It was flanked, at the angles, by strong towers, as well as two other smaller towers that defended the entrance, pierced in the eastern wing, all surrounded by wide and deep ditches, whose walls of beautiful stone give great air to this old mansion. Faithful servant of Louis XI, who appointed him in 1480 seneschal of Poitou, Yvon du Fou had built around 1465, on the edge of a wooded valley, at a place called Armenteresse, the castle to which he gave his name by royal authorization. There are gathered the characteristic elements of buildings of a certain importance built in the aftermath of the Hundred Years' War. During the last war, in August 1944, a violent English bombardment severely damaged it. Informations Free.
