"Fortunes de Mer". What a lovely formula used to describe the sad reality of an accident at sea, whether it is a storm, a capture by pirates or a shipwreck. The shipwreck is the partial or total loss of a ship due to an accident. It can occur at sea, but also on rivers, streams or lakes. Many reasons can explain the loss of a ship, since the damage to shipboard instruments or machinery, the heavy weather that would throw the boat onto reefs, pirate attacks, acts of war, collisions with icebergs or any other floating object identified or not, the encounter with marine animals and of course human error. The sinking may involve the total or partial loss of cargo, ship and also, unfortunately, the loss of human life. This exhibition looks back at the significant shipwrecks that have marked the maritime history of Brittany. Warships, fishing boats or pleasure craft, they are numerous to rest on the sea floor. Whether they were lost with their bodies or whether survivors could be saved and the cargo recovered, all these stories nourish Breton maritime history.
