Free visit – Church of St. Mary (Our Lady) of the Cuns

Welcome to the church of Sainte-Marie, better known as Notre-Dame des Cuns, in the heart of the hamlet of Cuns.

A Romanesque church from the 12th century

Mentioned as early as 1135 in a bull of Pope Innocent II, the church retains its Romanesque origin with its apse in cul-de-four and the barrel-vaulted choir.

Over the centuries, it has undergone transformations:

14th century: reconstruction of the nave and porch. 15th century: addition of the south chapel.

A classified monument

The church has been classified as a historical monument since 1942. It is owned by the municipality of Nant. The cult ceased there around 1840, but the building remains a precious witness of the religious and architectural history of Larzac.

Points to discover:

The Romanesque apse, decorated with arcatures and colonnettes. The choir and its span, barrel-vaulted. The walls and openings, which bear witness to medieval alterations. The site of the Cuns, in a typical plateau and valley landscape of southern Aveyron.
