Workshop for demonstration of illuminations
Florence Aseult, copyist of manuscripts and creator of illuminations inspired by the medieval tradition, offers you an immersive demonstration around illumination, ancestral art using precious materials, mixing precision, patience and know-how. On the program: Presentation of materials: discover the differences between parchment and vellum, their characteristics and uses. Natural pigments: where do they come from? How were they used? Florence will reveal their origins and traditional application techniques. Laying of gold leaf: live demonstration of the shell laying, a gesture once passed on from generation to generation among copyist monks. Calligraphy & calligrams: demonstration using traditional tools, notably hand-cut bird feathers, to compose exceptional texts and ornaments. Presentation of an original manuscript: entirely handcrafted by Florence during her training at the European Higher Institute for Illumination and Manuscripts. Time travel: an overview of the great periods of illumination through the centuries. Florence Aseult and the Château de Chantilly invites you to a unique moment to discover the secrets of a precious and meticulous art, between history, science of materials and beauty of gesture.
