In the 19th century, Roubaix experienced a rapid industrial boom accompanied by a demographic explosion. The urban fabric is becoming denser and the architecture of the entire city is organized around textile activity. In the second half of the 20th century, industrial buildings in Roubaix lost their function due to the economic decline of the sector. From the 1980s, remarkable examples of rehabilitation were then carried out, among the first in France. The multiplicity of the envisaged reconversions tries to respond as best as possible to the contemporary heritage and societal challenges.
